What Is Iodine?

Iodine is an essential trace mineral that the body needs to produce thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). These hormones help regulate metabolism, energy production, growth and many other vital functions. Because the body cannot make iodine on its own, it must come from the diet. Common iodine sources include seafood, seaweed, dairy products, eggs and iodized salt. In dietary supplements, iodine is typically provided in small microgram doses, often as potassium iodide or kelp (seaweed) extract.

Benefits of Iodine Supplements

Iodine contributes to normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. It also contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal functioning of the nervous system. Adequate iodine intake is especially important for women of childbearing age, pregnant women and children, because iodine supports normal growth and development. In regions where iodine intake from food is low, supplements or iodized salt can help prevent deficiency. However, too much iodine can also negatively affect thyroid function, so balanced intake is important.

Uses of Iodine

Iodine supplements are typically taken once daily according to the label instructions, often as part of a multivitamin or thyroid-support formula. People who avoid seafood, dairy or iodized salt may be more likely to have low iodine intake. It’s important to choose appropriate dosing and avoid taking multiple iodine-containing products at the same time. On our category page you can explore different iodine supplements – from simple potassium iodide tablets to kelp-based products – and choose an option that fits your needs.

Iodine: Side Effects and Safety

Iodine is safe in recommended amounts, but excessive intake may lead to thyroid irritation or changes in thyroid hormone levels. Possible effects of too much iodine include thyroid dysfunction, stomach upset or metallic taste. People with thyroid disease (such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease or thyroid nodules) should consult a healthcare professional before using iodine supplements. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also speak with a doctor to ensure appropriate dosing. Always follow the label instructions and avoid high-dose kelp products unless guided by a healthcare professional.
